The White Queen
Review By- Duvél Bridet
The White queen is written by, Philippa Gregory. an English historical novelist, the sixtyone year old author has written book series which have won her nobel prizes as well as movies and television shown based on her work. Over the years Philippa Gregory earned her international reputation by evoking sex, violence, love and betrayal among the characters in her historical fiction novels and there she adds intimate relationships, political maneuvering and battlefield conflicts as well as some well-drawn supernatural elements. This classic novel takes us back to the Wars of the Roses in this entrancing story. In her main character Elizabeth Woodville she has alighted on an intriguing subject as Elizabeth also believed herself to be a seer with magical powers who could curse her enemies. The white queen is a simple, classic tale of History, romance and fantasy and a fight for power, family and revenge.
This particular book intertwines both present and historical aspect amongst the characters, due to the way it portrays how women treat each other in current times and how men follow strong impulses like their desires and revenge which lead to start over two wars between the time of Elizabeth's reign.
Throughout her early life before she became Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth Woodville was a common Lancastrian Widower and the mother of two sons just before she had caught the eye of King Edward the IV a man who was new to his rule as the country was recently bypassing the first battle from the War of Roses between the Lancastrians and the three sons of York; Edward and his brothers Richard and George. King Edward was the first Yorkist King to ever rule England over the 1400 time period and by his side was the Lady Elizabeth Woodville who had won the young king's heart through his obscene nature and her beauty and sex appeal. Despite all this theirs was a true story of forbidden love because with the help of her mother Lady Jacquetta Rivers the only way Elizabeth and Edward could be together would be to wed in secret and share their love was in private at first .
The reason why I personally love this book is because history and fantasy mixed together are captivating, In this novel it has been educational about the major past events which influences the future. As we live in the present the past can seem like a whole other world with all exciting events that occur not just in The White Queen but in The cousins of war book series which carries on a beautiful classic characters along with strong female characters from the past and being in the future times there is no way to know exactly what happened in historic time however Philippa Gregory has written various books of her own interpretation and would make anyone who reads just one of her Novels hooked on the past fictional or not.
Many characters in the book are against each other for they all want the same thing but due to their unloyalty and treatory they committed treason against the ones they claim to love.
In order be fully satisfied by this story where the people are controlled by lust, revenge, magic and pure hate you will have to read the novel The White Queen in order to be fully intrigued.
